Hetty was born about 1809 in Frederick County, Virginia.  Hetty's father was George W. Rizer and her mother was Margaret "Peggy" Ambrose.  Her maternal grandfather was William Henry Ambrose and her maternal grandmother is Sarah. She had five brothers and four sisters, named Jacob, George, William, Benjamin, Philip, Anne, Catherine, Sophia and Maria.  She was the second youngest of the ten children.
