Maria was born about 1811 in Frederick County, Virginia.  Maria's father was George W. Rizer and her mother was Margaret "Peggy" Ambrose.  Her maternal grandfather was William Henry Ambrose and her maternal grandmother is Sarah. She had five brothers and four sisters, named Jacob, George, William, Benjamin, Philip, Anne, Catherine, Sophia and Hetty.  She was the youngest of the ten children.
