Someone named Franklin Moore gave his church affiliation as Methodist on 1915 census of Wayne Co., Iowa. Someone named Franklin Moore died at Peshtigo, Wisconsin according to notes apparently by Esther (Stevens) Moore, wife of James H. Moore whose home was in Peshtigo. I'm not sure whethere these were this person, though. 1846 - 1900 Margaret Emma Dean 53 53 Margaret Emma Dean was the seventh child of J. William Dean and Eliza J. Smith (from Rose's notes). 
At the time of her death, Margaret Emma Dean's place of residence was Renfrow Oklahoma, although she was taken to the hospital in Wichita, Ka. and died there.

Margaret appears on the 1880 census of Washington Township, Wayne Co., Iowa as Margaret McCart age 34.  Her parents birthplaces are not given. 1799 - 1871 Jane Utter 72 72 Jane Utter's gravestone, accoding to the Wayne County Iowa Cemetery Book, published in 1979, page 288, gives Jane Utter's birth date as December 6, 1798. 1803 - 1878 Samuel Moore 75 75 Said to be "cousin" of Gen. Samuel Houston.  Born in E. Tenn. according to 1856 Iowa census.  Moved from Bount Co., Tenn. to Boone Co., Jefferson Township., Indiana about 1833; moved to Newton Co., Jasper Township, Missouri about 1839 (appears on 1840 census); moved to Vigo Co., Indiana before 1844; moved to Wayne Co. Iowa in 1854.

According to notes by Carol Larsen, "The 1978-79 Wayne County Iowa cemetery directory  listed the following: Plot 8.1:  Moore, Samuel: Died Apr 9, 1878, Age 75 yr, 1 m, 26 d." 1825 - ~1892 Amanda Jane Moore 67 67 Amanda Moore apparently did not marry.  She is present in the household of her sister Martha S. Moore and her brother-in-law Alexander Perkins in the 1880 census of Washington Township, Wayne Co., Iowa.  Her birthplace is listed as Tennessee, and her age is given as 57!

According to Carol Larsen, Amanda died about 1892 at the home of her younger brother, William Augustus Moore, in Clearfield Iowa. 1826 Margaret Malinda Moore In an e-mail from Gerri George (12/30/2004), which contains a copy of information from a family group sheet done by Carol Larsen (her married name), a descentant of William A. Moore son of our Samuel, Margaret's middle name is reported as Malinda. 1827 - 1911 Hetty Ann Moore 84 84 She is found on the 1880 census of Wayne County IA, a widow, with sons William and Joseph Hogue still at home.

Rosemary Moore's notes on what appears to be Hetty A.'s obituary says that she had a total of nine children. ~1828 - ~1913 Joseph Utter Moore 85 85 Joseph U. Moore's sale of 2/3 interest in his saw- and grist mill in April of 1865 indicates that he was still in Wayne Co., IA at that time.  Wayne County Land Deeds. Deed Book, Vol 8, pg. 447.  Signed April 12, 1865.

We also find him and his family on the 1870 census of Wayne Co., Iowa in Washington Township.

Some time between 1880 and 1882 J. U. Moore moved with his family to Kansas, as his son George was born in Missouri in 1880; and his wife, Sarah Rayburn Moore, died in Cottonwood Falls, Chase Co., Kansas in September of 1882.

Rosemary Moore's notes on what appears to be Hetty A. Moore's obituary from 1911 lists Joseph Moore's residence as Kingman, Kansas.

Joseph U. Moore is buried in Prairie Grove Cemetery, Cottonwood Falls, Chase County, Kansas, USA.  His tombstone reads, "JOSEPH UTTER MOORE / 1828-1913." 1832 James Ellis Moore According to Wayne County, IA census records of 1856 and 1860 James E. Moore was born in 1832 or 1833 in Tennessee.  This agrees with the 1850 census of Sugar Creek, Vigo Co., Indiana which has James as 18.

Some time after July of 1865 when he was discharged from the Union army, he moved to Enid, OK.  But on the 1880 census of Allerton, Wayne Co., Iowa, he is listed as 50 years of age which would have him born about 1830.  This latter is probably incorrect.

Rosemary Moore West has a note from the 1860 census on James E. Moore to the effect that he was a "master carpenter."

He probably does not yet appear on the 1830 census of Blount Co., Tennessee, so he probably was born sometime after the 1830 census.  The 1840 census of Jasper, Newton County (later Jasper Co.), Missouri shows a child corresponding to James E. Moore of at least 5 and under 10.

According to notes by Rosemary Moore apparently taken from Hetty A. Moore's obituary of 1911, James Ellis Moore lived at that time in Ames, Oklahoma.

According to records of soldiers who served in Company D Iowa 23rd Infantry during the Civil War (available at http://www.rootsweb.com/~iawayne/civilwar.htm as of 16 Feb. 2007), James Ellis Moore was buried in Enid Oklahoma.  This source lists him as age 30 in 1865. 1833 Robert Cowden Moore In an e-mail from Gerri George (12/30/2004), she copies a family group sheet by Carol Larsen (married name), who is a descentant of William Augustus Moore, which gives Robert's middle name as Cowden.  Before we only knew the C.

Robert seems to be missing from the Samuel Moore household on the 1840 census of Newton Co., Missouri.  Did he die prior to the date of the cenus?

The place of birth of Robert Cowden Moore is given as Boone Co., Indiana according to reports based on genealogical notes by Allie Moore.  Allie is daughter of William Dean Moore who is a son of Samuel Houston Moore, son of Samuel Moore. 1834 - >1911 Martha Sarah Moore 77 77 In Rosemary Moore's notes on what appears to be Hetty A. Moore's obituary frome 1911, her sister Martha is still living. 1836 Mary F. Moore 1840 William Augustus Moore Place of birth according to Rosemary Moore's notes on the 1860 and 1856 censuses of Wayne Co., IA.  William A. Moore is also mentioned as W. A. Died of Gunshot wound he received while serving with the Union Army, Port Gibson, Miss.  His place of death was at the hospital in Grand Gulf, Mississippi.

A transcript of the 1850 Wayne Co., Ia. census (online 8/17/2004 at http://www.rootsweb.com/~iawayne/census/1155.htm) shows William and Hetty A. "Hoeage" and daughter Harriet.  He is listed as age 26, born Illinois, she as age 23, born Tennessee.  Daughter Harriet is listed as age 1, born Illinois. 1843 - 1882 Sarah Rayburn 39 39 Notes that depend on DAR research done by Hazel Sample, the grandaughter of this individual, has her listed as Sarah Raven.  Year of birth extrapolated from information on 1870 census of Wayne Co., Iowa.  Her parents, according to the 1880 census of Jefferson, Andrew Co., MO, were both born in Virginia. The burial in the Hogue cemetery Corydon Iowa of a Nancy Rayburn, who can be identified as Nancy See who married James Rayburn Sept. 15, 1838 in Mason Co. Notes on year of birth and place from Rose's notes on the 1870 census of Wayne Co., IA. 1834 - 1916 George W. Dean 81 81 Appears on the 1880 census of Warren, Wayne Co., Iowa as head of a household with his second wife Martha (Shipley) and seven children. 1870 - 1948 Gertrude Moore 78 78 Information on Gertrude's birth, marriage and death were published in her obituary in a newspaper from the area of Kingman Kansas.

Gertrude (age 10, born Iowa, father born Indiana, mother born Ohio) appears living with her grandmother Eliza J. [Smith] Dean on the 1880 census of Allerton, Wayne Co., Iowa. 1872 - 1958 Anna Houston Moore 85 85 ~1845 Allen McCart Birth date and place from 1880 census of Wayne Co., IA.  Same source says that both his parents were born in Ireland. 

Since Margaret Dean Moore McCart is listed on the 1885 census as Margaret Moore, widow, it appears that Allen is no longer present.  A reference to him in _The Pioneer McCart Family_, by Ralph Davison (1972) as cited by Sandra Childs (an e-mail contact) says that when Tommy (a son from his previous marriage) was about 8 years old (so about 1881) Allen was diagnosed with Tuberculosis and went back to Philadelphia where he died soon after.  Other information cited from this source by Sandra Childs has been incorrect or inexact, but this may be true since it explains certain otherwise unexplained matters in Margaret's life. 1879 - 1906 Isaac Newton McCart 26 26 1880 George Alford McCart 1767 - 1847 Martha Lycan 80 80 According to Rosemary Moore West's notes (but not in Rose's hand), Martha Lycan came from Scotland. 1790/1800 Samuel Utter Samuel Utter appears on the 1840 census of Edgar County, IL as age between 40 and 50.  There are also, in his household, one male under 5 and one between 10 and 15.  There is one female between 5 and 10, one between 10 and 15 and two between 15 and 20.  Samuel Utter is listed on the census next to his brother-in-law Samuel Colville Vance (b. 1813), listed as between 20 and 30 years of age. Joseph Utter 1805 - 1892 Martha Utter 86 86 Martha Utter is found in the 1880 census of Newton, Jasper Co., Illinois as Martha Maxwell, age 76, widow, born Tennessee.  She is listed as the mother-in-law of the household head John Banta.  Oddly, both her parents are listed as born in Tennessee. D. 1822 Sarah Utter Rosemary Moore West's notes do not include Sarah as a daughter of Abraham III.  Joni Utter-Anderson includes a Sarah under both Abraham II and Abraham III. Thomas and Sarah Utter as the final two children of Abraham Jr.  Joni Utter-Anderson includes the names as both children of Abraham and Abraham Jr. William Utter 1765 - 1851 Abraham Utter 85 85 According to information gathered from Allie Moore (dau. of William Dean Moore) in Rosemary Moore West's notes, Abraham Utter fought in the Revolutionary War.  He enlisted about age 14 in Apr. or May of 1779.  He served 6 mo. as a private under Captian Daugherty, State of Pa.  Elisted July or Aug. 1780 or '81 for 2 mo. as a private under Capt. McCollister, State of Pa.  He enlisted in March 1782 for 2 months 14 days under Capt. Herrold, State of Pa.  For his Revolutionary War service, according to Joni Utter-Anderson, he was granted 300 acres in what was then Washington County, NC (later Blount Co. Tennessee near Maryville).  He and his family were members of the Baker Creek Presbyterian Church in that locality.

According to notes by Joni Utter-Anderson (a gggg grandaughter of Abraham of PA and Bount Co. TN through Abraham, Jr.), Abraham Utter of Blount County, Tennessee and his family withdrew their membership from that church on Oct. 15, 1831 to move to Thorntown, Boone Co., Indiana where some of the older Utter relatives (i.e. older children?) had gone as early as 1812.  Joni also affirms that the photograph of Abraham which accompanies this page was provided by her great uncle, James Russell Utter.

Abra[ha]m Utter appears on a transcript of the 1840 census of Boone County, Indiana (sheet 175, line 9).  He is listed as between 70 and 80 with a woman listed also as 70 to 80.  His son Abraham, Jr. (listed as A Jr., Utter) also appears on the same census, sheet 176, line 1. Shipley 52 52 Maxine Corell 1810 - 1894 Eliza Jane Smith 83 83 In some sources, she is called Elsa J. Bracewell.  This is incorrect; she is being confused with another individual (DLM).  According to Rose's notes on the 1880 census of Wayne Co., IA, her name is Elsa J. The 1880 census of Allerton, Wayne Co., Iowa lists her as Eliza J. Dean, born PA, widowed, age 69, father born Ireland, mother born Ireland.  She is head of the household; and her granddaughter, Gertrude Moore, age 10, born Iowa, father born Indiana, mother born Ohio, is living with her. 1811 - 1858 J. William Dean 47 47 ~1769 Isabella Smythe ~1769 John Smith His surname was Smythe according to some sources.  This, however, was the surname of his wife, Isabella Smythe according to what seem to be more reliable sources.

Dear Mrs. Smith:

As promised a while ago I dug through my old slides and found a
picture of the house my wife and myself bought at the end of
1968.

The two pictures were taken at the end of 1968. The one picture
shows the house as seen from the driveway. The other one is a
close up.

We can give you a few explanations about this house:

The left part of the house i.e. the part of the house which is
directly behind the covered porch was most probably the first
house built on the property and it was a small log house. Later
on the right part of the house was added and was made out of
stones. When we bought it the stone part of the house had a wood
floor laid directly on dirt. In the process of excavating to
make a sitting pit we found a dry pit filled with rubbish which
did not reveal anything of interest. This stone part was
probably added ca. 1850 since we found some news papers of the
1850's which had been used to seal off the frame of the backdoor
of the log house.

The addition of the stone part seems to have been a major change
since wood frame work was set on top of the log cabin to be able
to join the two parts with a common level roof as you see in the
picture.

I should add that the log cabin part had a small basement which
had in one corner a small sealed off fire place which was
probably used during the first winter before the log cabin was
completely finished.

The log part of the house has since been replaced. The stone
part is still here.

I believe that all the researach you mention in your letter is
correct. The house on the picture is at the end of the triangular
piece of land we bought in 1968. This land corresponds to the
survey made in 1798 when your ancestor bought it.

I hope I have filled in some of the questoins you had. That's
all for now.

Dean 81 81 Appears on the 1880 census of Warren, Wayne Co., Iowa as head of a household with his second wife Martha (Shipley) and seven children. 1868 - 1948 William Dean Moore 80 80 William Dean Moore was born in Wayne County, Iowa in 1868. His father, Samuel Houston Moore died of pneumonia when Will was only four years old. When his mother remarried, Will and his brother Frank went to live with relatives. He lived with an uncle, Mr.. Hill, in Cherokee County, Kansas. He worked two years for Mr. Smith in McPherson County, Kansas, when he was about sixteen. Then Will and Frank went to Washington and Oregon and worked in the lumber and at farm work.

They returned to Kansas for the opening of the Cherokee Strip. They registered at Caldwell, Kansas. On September 16, 1893, Will was waiting at the Kansas State line south of Caldwell for the signal so he could make the run into the Cherokee Strip so he might have his own home. He was not alone; his brother, Frank, and brothers-in-law, Andrew Wilson and Nick Hobson, were also making the race.

The four men had a chuck wagon, but Will chose to ride his horse in the race. His horse stepped in a hole and fell and Will's leg was hurt. He staked a claim that evening about three miles east and ten miles south of Caldwell. Deer Creek ran through his quarter. When he awoke the next morning, there was another man on this quarter. Will said, "The land didn't look too good and the man was a rough looking character, so I decided to go back to Caldwell and see if I could locate the chuck wagon."

Will didn't know at the time but Frank had staked a claim five and a half miles east of Renfrow, Oklahoma; and the brothers-in-law staked the farm across the road from Frank for Will's mother, Margaret Moore McCart. This was about three miles north of where Will spent the night.

Will stayed at Caldwell for about two weeks, until his leg got so he could ride again, and then he went to Enid to the land office. He found a claim south of Billings in Noble County that had not been filed on. He built a sod house. The first two years after the, opening were dry and they did not raise a crop. In the fall, Will took his three horses and wagon and went to Cherokee County, Kansas where his uncle lived to shuck corn. Will said if he didn't raise a crop the next year, he was going to leave Oklahoma; but he raised a crop the next year.

In 1898, Will built a two room frame house. In 1899, he married Lola G. Cramer who lived about eight miles west of his homestead. Lola was born in Wayne County, Iowa in 1879. Lola's parents came to Oklahoma two or three years after the strip opened.

In the spring of 1901, Will sold his farm and bought a farm five and one half miles east of Renfrow and across the road west from Frank's farm. William and Lola and their children, Samuel Houston, Charley, Allie and Harry continued to live on this farm until 1920. Then they bought a house in Caldwell so their children could go to high school. Houston, Charley and Allie continued their education and graduated from Oklahoma State University. Harry married and decided to farm. He lived on a farm just two miles from the home place until 1937 when he moved to Kay County to continue farming. Harry retired and now lives in Blackwell. His son Max is principal at Pond Creek High School.

Lola died at Caldwell in 1937. Will died at Winfield, Kansas in 1948. About five years previous to his death he went to Winfield to live with his daughter, Allie, who was a teacher in the high school at Winfield.

Charley died in 1972 at his home in San Antonio where he had lived many years.
