Joseph was born in 1793.  Joseph's father was Reuben Herndon and his mother was Hannah Long.  His paternal grandparents were Joseph Herndon and Polly Elliott. He had eight brothers and two sisters, named George, Jesse, Elliott, Elisha, Moses, Aaron, David, Reuben, Sarah and Anna.  He was the oldest of the eleven children.  He died about 1813.
