Moses was born in 1802.  Moses' father was Reuben Herndon and his mother was Hannah Long.  His paternal grandparents were Joseph Herndon and Polly Elliott. He had eight brothers and two sisters, named Joseph, George, Jesse, Elliott, Elisha, Aaron, David, Reuben, Sarah and Anna.  He was the sixth oldest of the eleven children.  He died at the age of 60 in 1862.
