Reuben was born in 1812.  Reuben's father was Reuben Herndon and his mother was Hannah Long.  His paternal grandparents were Joseph Herndon and Polly Elliott. He had eight brothers and two sisters, named Joseph, George, Jesse, Elliott, Elisha, Moses, Aaron, David, Sarah and Anna.  He was the youngest of the eleven children.
