Thomas was born about 1785 in Wilkes County, Georgia.  Thomas' father was Thomas Travis and his mother was Hannah Hutchins.  His paternal grandparents were John Travis and Nancy Copeland. He had two brothers and four sisters, named William, Jeremiah, Elizabeth, Catherine, Nancy and Hannah.  He was the second youngest of the seven children. He had four half-brothers named James, John, Beverly and Jeremiah.
