William was born in 1783 in Baltimore County, Maryland.  William's father was Thomas Travis and his mother was Hannah Hutchins.  His paternal grandparents were John Travis and Nancy Copeland. He had two brothers and four sisters, named Jeremiah, Thomas, Elizabeth, Catherine, Nancy and Hannah.  He was the third oldest of the seven children. He had four half-brothers named James, John, Beverly and Jeremiah.
