Edith was born about 1878 in Bridgends, Glamorgan, Wales.  Edith's father was Richard Keagle and her mother was Caroline Smith. She had five brothers and three sisters, named George, Richard, Albert, Jessie, Reuben, Ann, Ellen and Charlotte.  She was the youngest of the nine children.
