George was born about 1866 in Neath, Glamorgan, Wales.  George's father was Richard Keagle and his mother was Caroline Smith. He had four brothers and four sisters, named Richard, Albert, Jessie, Reuben, Ann, Ellen, Charlotte and Edith.  He was the second oldest of the nine children.
