Ellen was born about 1871 in Neath, Glamorgan, Wales.  Ellen's father was Richard Keagle and her mother was Caroline Smith. She had five brothers and three sisters, named George, Richard, Albert, Jessie, Reuben, Ann, Charlotte and Edith.  She was the fifth oldest of the nine children.
