Amanda was born in January 1886 in Morgan County, West Virginia.1   Amanda's father was Peter V. Ambrose and her mother was Mariah Alice Whisner.  Her paternal grandparents were Daniel Ambrose and Anna Nancy Rizer. She had six brothers and four sisters, named Charles, Elmira, Samuel, William, Levi, Harry, Anna, Mollie, Lillie and Eva.  She was the youngest of the eleven children. She had five half-brothers named Jesse, Aaron, George, E. and Jeremiah.
