E. was born in 1858 in Virginia.1   E.'s father was Peter V. Ambrose and his mother was Mary Ann Harlan.  His paternal grandparents were Daniel Ambrose and Anna Nancy Rizer. He had four brothers named Jesse, Aaron, George and Jeremiah.  He was the second youngest of the five children. He had six half-brothers and five half-sisters, named Charles, Elmira, Samuel, William, Levi, Harry, Anna, Mollie, Lillie, Eva and Amanda.
