Wilkin, as part of his research for his Wilkin Family History. The story was written about 1902 for the Ohio Centennial.

"Samuel Wilkin of Hamer Township, an extensive farmer, Manufacturer, and breeder of livestock, comes of highly honorable ancestry which runs back to the earliest pioneer days. They were originally Virginians and came from that historic section known as the Shenandoah Valley, arriving in Ohio Territory when it was still a hunting grounds for roving Indians. The grandfather of Mr. Wilkin, whose name was William was one of the most prosperous farmers of his day and accumulated a large amount of property. He married Rebecca Windle and by her had a family of eight children, Peter, Joseph, Sarah, Eli, Elizabeth, William, Ann, and George, all now dead except the last mentioned, who lives in Hamer Twp.

"William Wilkin was cut off from his usefulness in the prime of life and after his death, the widow continued to manage the farm and look after the welfare of her large family. Joseph Wilkin, second of the children in age, was born in New Market township in 1816, and in early manhood married Nancy, daughter of Allen and Elizabeth Roush of Highland County. He located on a place in Union Township where he lived until 1855 when he purchased a farm of 123 acres in Hamer Twp. To this he removed and there spent the remainder of his days, passing away at the age of seventy-one, his wife surviving until some years later. Of their six children Elizabeth, Allen and Augustus have died; Samuel is the subject of this sketch; Rebecca J. is the wife of Lewis Orebaugh of Hamer Township; Joseph F. is a minister of the Methodist Episcopal Church.

"Samuel Wilkin, second of the children was born in Union Township, Highland Co., Ohio, September 8, 1843 and remained at home until he reached his majority. About that time he married Roseanna Webster, daughter of George N. and Mary Pugh Webster, of Dodson Twp, and located there on a small tract of land, where he spent the five following years. He then removed to a farm in Hamer Township given to him by his father, where he now resides, adding to the property and greatly improving it from year to year since he took possession. In 1882 he began the manufacture of tile, which he has since continued in partnership with his son, Dallas under the firm name of Samuel Wilkin and Son. The use the latest and best improved machinery and do business on an extensive scale. As a farmer and stock raiser Mr. Wilkin has no superior in the township. His real estate holdings now consist of about 437 acres of the best quality of land, which is kept highly improved condition and is cultivated by up-to-date methods. In

"1891 he constructed a handsome brick residence, which has all the modem improvements and conveniences and in both size and quality is superior to anything of the kind in the township. In fact everything on and about this model farm indicates skillful and progressive management, as the buildings and equipment of all kinds are neat and attractive and always kept in prime condition.

"Mr. Wilkin takes a just pride in his splendid Poland China and Berkshire Hogs, of which he has long been an extensive breeder and shipper, and he enjoys a high reputation in this department of the livestock industry. He has found time from his farm and other business to fulfill all the duties of a good citizen, being especially interested in educational and religious work. He held the position of school director for nine consecutive years, and during the whole of his adult life has been a member of the Christian Church and one of its most enthusiastic workers.

"His marriage has been blessed with fourteen children in the order of their birth as follows: Louella M., the wife of S. R. Kidd of Dodson Twp. and mother of three children, Almira, Anna F. and Samuel K.; Augustus E., who lives in Hamer Township married Lizzie Fawley and has had five children, those living being Dortha L., Arnold, and Hugh N.; Dallas O. in business with father, who married Jennie Hawthorn and has had three children, Orpha, Nancy and Hilda (deceased); William F., of Hamer twp. who married Susan Duvall and has two children living, Gladys and an infant and one dead; Joseph N. of Hamer Twp., who married Lucy J. Stroup, their children being Norma R. and Paul; Cora M., who married J. N. Dollinger, of Dodson Twp, and has three children, Elizabeth I., Lotta M. and Anna A.; George R. in Hamer Twp., who married Hattie E. Williams, and have one child, Edgar Franklin; Samuel B., who married Myrtle McKamey and lives in Dodson, Twp; Nancy N Mary J.; and Henry, with their parents; John A. who was killed in 1900 when eleven years old by being run over by a loaded wagon; Evertt Louis, who died in 1892 at age of two years and eight months; Rosa O., the youngest of this interesting family."

As one can clearly see the writer was not very accurate as to the names of Samuel and Roseanna's children but he does present a real and lasting picture of our Patriarch and the great faith in God, Country and Family that Samuel and Roseanna have passed on to us all. The results of their examples have assisted us all in being very productive, energetic people, that love life and most of us try very hard to live up to their principles. God has most certainly blessed us all to have been born into such a great family. Our Grandparents have left their mark on the Highland County, Ohio area forever.

Stories still survive today in Hamer Township community about Samuel Wilkin. Because of his prominence in the area and also because he always sported a full beard that in later years was silky white, a lot of children (who are now grown and gone) passed on to everyone that he was Uncle Sam. He had that name by several that knew and wrote articles about this man that did so much for the Church and Schools of Highland County. The name must have caught on as a lot of his business associates also refer to him in their writings as Uncle Sam.

Samuel and Roseanna left more than history behind in Highland County. With fourteen children of whom all but two grew to adulthood and had families of their own, several who had many children, have left descendants that now number in the thousands. So this couple has left a growing number of reasons to be remembered and a permanent living legacy of their Journey, Faith in God and lessons on being good citizens.

He was born on the family farm in Hamer Township, in Highland Co., Ohio April 29, 1886. Some of his elder siblings were adults with families of their own by the time he came into this world. Henry was blessed with the opportunity to grow up with a prosperous and very busy family. He was taught the faith of his parents and was very active with the Christian Church until his death in November of 1969. Henry was very young when his father purchased the first steam tractor delivered to that part of Ohio. Henry had learned to farm in the most up-to-date methods of the day. He had the opportunity to learn from studies at school as his father was very active in the development of the schools system in that part of Highland County. Henry received a high school education and a love to write poetry. When he grew to manhood he married Lola Mae Cadwallader January 16, 1907 who was the daughter of Clark and Sussannah (Hawk) Cadwallader of Highland County, Ohio. Their marriage was blessed with eight children, Magdalene Loree, Emmitt Richard, Ina Ganelle, Lavina Irene, Clara Mae, Roscoe Elmore, Opal Elizabeth, and Susan Roseannah

Henry worked with his father and brothers for several years and was a noted builder of barns and other buildings as well as a farmer. He was pictured moving a building to a new location by a steam tractor in the early 1900s. He graded roads and operated most of the threshing equipment that the family owned. In his spare time he wrote poems and loved the gospel. Henry also worked with a prize team of horses on his farm in Danville and later in Mt. Sterling, Ohio. He moved to Licking County Ohio about 1939 and was Overseer for the Wherley Farms in what is now Heath Village, Ohio. He purchased a house on Granville Street in Newark, Ohio and continued to raise the rest of his family there. Hard work and simple pleasures he took in his garden and Church activities. He was a devoted member of the Christian Church as his father before him had been. Attending the Wilkin Reunion held each year in Highland County was a passion for him. At these Reunions he would most always have a new Poem that he had written for that occasion and would either read it or have it read for the enjoyment of those in attendance.

In his later life he had a passion for growing truck gardens and had a garden stand in front of his house on Granville Street every year almost until his death. He was pictured in the Newark Advocate with one of his prize winning Sunflowers at over 12 feet tall. He was always getting articles written on his Flowers and Garden Produce as well as creating new recipes for cakes and baked goods. His Kraut was always the talk of the family and his canned foods were some of the best in the area. He had really taken to the lesson of his father for excellence.

After raising his family and working all his life, he was heard on several occasions to say "when the Good Lord Calls me Home, I want to die with my boots on". On November 11, 1969 in his eighty-third year of life, Henry Richard Wilkin had a sudden heart attack while cleaning his eaves troughs, and died. He died as he wished while working at something.

He passed on to God's Mercy and is sadly missed by all his children and grandchildren. He was buried November 15, 1969 in Wilson Cemetery, Newark, Licking County, Ohio.

Nina Sue Cadwallader Dunn

Nina Sue Dunn, 89, of Wilmington, died Monday, Sept. 11, 2006 at Quaker Heights in Waynesville.

Born June 23, 1917 in Danville, she was the daughter of the late Ira and Nancy Wilkin Cadwallader.

She was a member of the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Wilmington and the Quilt Club, active in the Wilmington Senior Center and graduated from Lynchburg High School in 1934.

She married John D. Dunn on Feb. 11, 1937. He preceded her in death Jan. 1, 1995.

She is survived by her children, [names omitted]; grandchildren, [names omitted]; great-grandchildren,[names omitted] ; numerous nieces and nephews; a brother, Hugh Cadwallader of Danville; and a sister, Faye Faris of Wilmington.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by one grandson, John Arthur Dunn; sisters, Ruth Dolphin, Mozelle Bloom and Margene Vance; and brothers, Winsor, Roy, Doyle and Dale Cadwallader.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Wilmington. Burial will be in the Sugar Grove Cemetery in Wilmington.

Friends may call at the church from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service.

Emmitt Richard Wilkin was born November 16. 1911 in Highland County, Ohio on a farm operated by his father, Henry Richard Wilkin. He was the first of two sons and the second child that was born to this marriage of Henry Richard and Lola May Cadwallader Wilkin.

One of Lola's older brothers, Ira, had married one of Henry's older sisters which seemed to be the way things went in families of the Period.

Emmitt graduated from High School in New Vienna in 1931 and was farming with his father on a farm near Mt. Sterling, Ohio.

In 1934, Emmitt married Millie Mabel Hunt in New Vienna. He and Millie set up housekeeping on a farm belonging to his Aunt Eli located between Danville and New Market south and west of Hillsboro, Ohio.

Shortly after their first child Betty Louise Wilkin, was born, they moved to Licking County, Ohio. There on a farm rented from Mrs. Montgomery of Newark, Ohio near the village of Toboso, in Licking County, along the Cicking River and on the Old Railroad Tracks for the BO, they remained for several years. This farm was also located near a very famous landmark called "Black Hand Gorge". Emmitt became friends with a man named Guy Shrider, who was involved with the oil wells that were on the Montgomery farm and struck a deal with him to rent and operate his farm just 2 miles south of the Village of Homer, Ohio. This farm was still located in Licking County and was situated on the Lake Fork Creek, that divided the farm horizontally from the east to the west. Emmitt remained on this farm until the winter of 1969 when he retired from farming.

Emmitt, like his grandfathers and father before him, was a very successful farmer. He was very strict about hard work and always challenged to be the best at farming. He was a very religious man and shared that with his family. He was always the first to work his ground and the first in the area to plant. He always seemed to be the first one to finish and then was off doing custom work for other farmers in the area that depended on him for their work to get accomplished also. He would put his hay in the barns before anyone could and then was off to bale the rest of the farms in the area it seemed. He always kept his farm and equipment in top notch order and was always ready to work when required.

In the middle of his adult life Emmitt went to Welding School in Cleveland, Ohio. When he returned to the farm with his new skills he started making farm wagons as he could not buy any to his specifications at any of the farm supply outlets in all of Ohio. So he went to salvage yards throughout the area and purchased used heavy auto parts from the steering devices of Buick, Cadillac, or from used trucks. He then purchased steel I-beams and H-iron and constructed the wagon chassis from scrap. His wagons were soon in hot demand and through the winter months when the farming was at a standstill, he soon was making more from building wagons and selling them to others than the farm was making at the time. It was a supplement to the family income and he did well with it. Finally one day New Holland Company came to the farm to see this new kind of wagon that they had been hearing about and bought the designs that he had for his wagon. These wagons could be turning around in the barnyard so short that one back wheel would almost pivot. Another great feature was that these wagons travel down the roadways being pulled by a pickup and never wander like the manufactured farm wagons of that era. Two could be connected together and pulled at highway speeds without swerving from side to side and out of line with one another.

Emmitt always was looking for ways to improve on his farming and his prize Yorkshire hogs were always the talk of the area, also his prime herds of Hereford Cattle were always a topic of discussion because many people could smell the feed lot well before they ever got to the house along the road. In about 1963 he sold the last of the livestock that was on the farm and went to farming crops from fencerow to fencerow. He planted the whole farm except for the 30 or so acres of woods that was on the place. He let the crops be sold instead of feeding it all and having to grind the feed for all the livestock as in the past. He was very successful at this and the rest of his farming life this is the way that he farmed.

Throughout his life Emmitt had been very active with the Church of Christ in Utica and had held several positions such as Deacon and Elder. He had at the same time served as President of the Licking County Farm Bureau and member of the council; as Master of the Licking Valley Grange and several offices thereof; he attended State and National Conventions as a delegate; had been on at least one trip to represent local farmers to the Secretary of Agriculture and Congress in Washington, D. C.

All through Emmitt's life he was an avid hunter and really enjoyed hunting deer on the farm in Licking County. He really enjoyed hunting with his sons and in later years looked forward to those times very much. He had a passion for communicating with his CB radio and had it on most of the time except when he was listening to the gospel music or watching/taping those or wildlife programs. He did not watch TV much except for those programs. Emmitt had an acute problem with his eyes and kept the house quite dark and always wore dark glasses outside. According to his eye doctors this condition could have been caused by snow blindness he had suffered while on a hunting trip to West Virginia, the dust from the farm, or the welding that he had done for years. Whatever the cause he suffered with it for many years and was not able to enjoy a lot of Events or even watch TV much as his eyes would blink hard and constant and he was always having to put drops into his eyes to get by much at all.

He discovered late in his life that he really enjoyed going to places like the Black Hills of South Dakota and the Buffalo Bill Museum in Cody, Wyoming. He agreed to go on several trips with his son Richard and his family and surprised himself at how much he had missed of this country.

Emmitt and Millie had gotten a divorce in 1961. Millie and the Twins then in their teens moved to Croton, Ohio. Emmitt remained alone on the farm until he quit farming in 1969 when he sold all of his equipment and moved to 121 Waterworks Road which was his residence until September of 1992. He sold his house in August of 1992, then on Labor Day weekend Emmitt drove to Pueblo West, Colorado to join his youngest son Richard and his wife there.

Emmitt's son Richard, had relocated his belongings and furnishings to Colorado just a week or so earlier. The last of September he purchased a small home in Pueblo West, just a short distance from his son's home.

Just as he was really getting settled into his new home and all the activities for the Seniors in his new town, he had a fatal heart attack and died on his 81st birthday at about 5 AM in the morning. Richard respecting his wishes had Emmitt returned to Newark so that he could be interred at Wilson Cemetery, just two stones south of Lola and Henry, and next to his older sister Loree.

His life was almost always the hard way but it was his way and the Good Lord granted Emmitt his repeated request. He always said, "if the Lord would grant him one request in this life it would be that when my time comes, he would let me just go to bed one night and just not wake up the next morning." On the very day of his 81st birthday the Lord did just that.

Life of Millie Mabel Hunt Wilkin as written by her son, Richard A. (Rick) Wilkin.

Millie Mabel Hunt was the first child born to Stephen Dixon and Fairy Bell (Smith) Hunt. She was born near Mt. Joy, Ohio on the border of Sciota and Pike County, Ohio on December 12, 1912. As a child she grew up in Pike County and attended Church at Mt. Joy, Ohio. When she was in her teens her family moved to Fayette County where she met and married Emmitt Richard Wilkin of Highland County Ohio.

They were married on March 12, 1934. She and Emmitt set up housekeeping on Emmitt's Aunt's farm in Highland County, and remained there for several years. She maintained the household and helped with all of the chores. Millie gave birth to five children; first was Betty Louise Wilkin on February 14, 1935; then came James Edward Wilkin on April 1, 1939. By that time the family had moved to a rented farm in Licking County at a town called Toboso. Then Donald Lee Wilkin was born on August 26, 1941.

Sometime around 1945 while World War Two was in progress, the family moved to another rental farm near Homer, Ohio in Licking County. The last of the five children who were twins, Richard Allen and Margaret Ann Wilkin were born July 9, 1946.

Millie was always busy taking care of her family, her chickens and the gardens. She canned it seemed throughout the summer and even delivered meals to the field to feed her family while they worked in the crops. Her house was always clean and children well cared for. She always encouraged them to do their best.

In the summer of 1961 after having several years of difficulties, Emmitt and Millie separated and later divorced. Millie made her way to Croton, Ohio and worked to support her two youngest children. She would stay with elderly people as a live-in Practical Nurse. After Margaret and Richard graduated from High School and Richard left for service in the US Air Force and Margaret was ready to go off to Nursing School in Washington D.C., Millie bought a Mobil Home and moved south of Heath on US 79, north of Hebron. She lived there for a few years and then moved her home to Heath, Ohio, just over the Raceway and after a few years purchased a piece of ground on Chevrolet Avenue between Outville and Pataskala, Ohio.

All this time she continued to work as an LPN, taking care of elderly people in their homes. She worked long and hard hours and only got home to her little house on weekends or when the relief Nurse was scheduled. When she retired about 1985, soon after her health began to deteriorate. By 1987 it was clear to her family that she could no longer be living so far away from them. Richard had moved to Michigan where he was working and living after retiring from the Air Force. Margaret had moved to Evansville, Indiana. Millie sold her home on Chevrolet Avenue and decided to move to Evansville to be near Margaret and her family.

She rented an apartment Senior Citizens on Fulton Ave. in Evansville and Richard and his wife Anna packed her up in Ohio and moved her to her new home in Evansville. When they arrived there Margaret and husband Ron McMillen moved her things into her apartment. She remained there for several years. About 1994, Millie fell in her apartment and broke her hip. She had to have surgery to replace the broken hip and then went to live with Margaret and her family at their home in Evansville. Millie's health continue to fail and it got to the point that Margaret and her family could no longer give here continuous care that she needed and she was moved to the Holiday Care Center where she is residing at this writing (1999- 2000). She is very active in the various activities of the Care Center and has been elected to the Council there.

Margaret and family have remained vigil in their care for Millie. The rest of her family gather around her whenever they can. Margaret has had as many as twenty people at a time who have crowded into her home for Thanksgiving Dinners, Christmas, and of course around Dec. 10th. The family of Millie owe a great debt of gratitude to Ron and Margaret for all they have done throughout the years for Millie. Millie continues with the Love of all her family and will be 88 years old on December 10, 2000.

Loree Wilkin Smith was a very hard working Christian lady who was devoted to her two sons and raised them without the assistance of a real partner in life. She was dearly loved by her nieces and nephews as well as her own sons. She was always looking out for children of her brothers and sisters and was very close to all. "Aunt Ree" as she was affectionately called by all of them. She was taken to the Lord early in life after a very long bout with Cancer. Even in her weakened condition she provided for her sons by making arrangements for them to be raised by Harold and Velma Prong who was minister for the Utica Church of Christ in Utica, Ohio. She left these earthly bonds on January 15, 1963.

As fine tribute to her wishes that her sons would grow in their Christian Faith, both have gone on to become active Ministers. She would have been extremely proud and has probably been watching over them all these years. by Rick Wilkin

When my childhood farm had to be sold to pay Ohio State University Medical bills, I changed vocational goals. As a Sophomore in High School, I began to prepare for Bible College. I married my church camp sweetheart, and took five years to earn my BS Degree. After my college ministry in Henderson, Michigan, our family moved to Kenton, Ohio. We built a four hundred seat auditorium. We were there seventeen years.

In December 1985, I met with the Elders. "I think God may be calling me our family to New England," I said. After our fact-finding visit in April 1986, The Manchester, New Hampshire Christian Church called us to serve near Rochester, New Hampshire. the Kenton Elders agreed that we should plan to move to New England. They gave us Wednesday and Sunday evenings off to travel throughout Ohio, Indiana and Michigan to raise support. It was two years before our Ohio home sold and we could build a thirty by forty log home in Lebanon, Maine. Many people have prayed and provided support so we can serve here. Being bi-vocational missionaries allows us to influence people in the Rochester, Somersworth, and Dover New Hampshire as well as Lebanon and Berwick Maine communities.

We love being in this rural area where hard working people are a real challenge to reach for Christ. We have been favored with Christian spouses for two of our children. We have a church of several families that meet s in our home each Lord's Day. We live in the American Mission field of over one hundred thousand primarily unchurched, broken people. Michelle married Ryan Daniel Myers, born October 9, 1973 in Kettering, Ohio, at St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Hillsboro, Ohio on August 3, 1996. Michelle and Ryan were blessed with the birth of Alexander Jacob Myers on October 13, 1998 in Wilmington, Ohio.

Michelle received a BA in Music Education from Wilmington College in 1993. She taught in the Highland County School System as a Substitute Teacher for three years, then taught Elementary Music for a year. She is now employed as a full-time "Mommy" to Alex. Ryan is a 1996 graduate of Wilmington College, with a BA Degree in English and Theatre. He is employed by Sterling Jewelers and is preparing to attend Graduate School in 2000.

Lorine Mathews Harner, born August 21, 1976, in Hillsboro, Ohio. Lorene attended Berea College, Berea, KY and spends her summers working at 4-H Camp Clifton in Yellow Springs, Ohio as the Head Cook.

David Hawthorne Harner, born November 27, 1977 in Hillsboro, Ohio. David graduated from Hillsboro High School and Laurel Oaks Career Development Center in Agriculture Mechanics. He is buying the family farm and hopes to continue the family farming operation.

Nancy Mae Fenstermacher Harner, born November 27, 1979 in Wilmington, Ohio. Nancy is a graduate of Hillsboro High School and is attending Southern State Community College in Hillsboro and plans to become a Registered Nurse. She is currently employed as Unit Clerk of Progressive Care Unit at Clinton County Memorial Hospital, Wilmington, Ohio.

Samuel Orlando Harner, born May 7, 1980 in Wilmington, Ohio. Sam is a Senior at Hillsboro High School where he is a Defensive End and Tackle on the Football Team. He also enjoys throwing the Discus and Shot Put in Track and participating in FFA. In 1999, he was runner-up in Ohio for his Home Improvement Project through the East Clinton FFA Chapter.

John and Jennie have operated the Harner family farm which his parents and grandparents have operated since 1929. In February 1997 their family home was destroyed by fire. David is buying the farm on land contract and rebuilding the house. John and Jennie now live in New Vienna. Jennie has taught for the past 30 years in the Hillsboro City School System.

She has been actively involved in music, playing Flute, Piano, and Organ. She has been the organist at Fairview Friends Church (Quaker) for 20 years and organist at St. Mary's Episcopal Church for 30 years. Jennie retired from Teaching in 1999. John operated the family dairy farm until 1985 when the dairy herd was sold. He accepted the District Ohio Young Farmer (FFA) Dairy Award in 1977 and was one of five winners in the five state area selling milk to Milk Marketing Incorporated in 1981. John and Jennie received a trip to the University of Colorado for the National OIC Convention. He is active in Church and Lions Club. He is now employed by Airborne Express in Wilmington, Ohio.

The children have all been extremely active in 4-H and have all won awards at the Ohio State Fair level. The girls were actively involved in music, Nancy played in several honor bands, including the Ohio State Fair Band. Lorine was a member of the Berea Dancers at Berea College and Michelle was very involved in the Music programs at Wilmington College. Michelle, David and Sam have received numerous awards at the local, District and State levels of the Ohio Farmers of America, Wilmington, Ohio.

Betty Louise Wilkin was the first child born to Emmitt Richard and Millie Mabel Hunt Wilkin.
b. in Highland Co, Ohio on Feb 14, 1935. She graduated in May of 1953 from Homer High School in Homer, Licking Co., Ohio. She married Ralph Clinton Ashbrook in Liberty, Indiana on June 13, 1953.

Betty and Ralph had two children born to their marriage who were Cynthia Margaret born Jan 28, 1954 in Newark, Ohio and Gregory Paul born on Dec 15, 1956, also in Newark, Ohio.

Shortly after Gregory was born, Betty and Ralph separated and divorced a year later. Betty continued to raise her children and worked at various jobs to support them and herself. She attended Barber School in Columbus, Ohio and after receiving her license as a stylist went to work cutting hair. After several years of working in other shops, she opened her own shop.

In about 1962 Betty had one fellow in her life by the name of Richard Porter, Together they had one child, Angela Sue Porter born June 16, 1964 in Columbus, Ohio.

Betty moved to Chevrolet Ave, East of Pataskala, Ohio where she ran her shop out of a converted railroad caboose. After her youngest daughter graduated from high school, Betty moved her home and business to Newark, Ohio. After having some health problems that would no longer allow her to work at her profession in about 1994, Betty moved to California which had been her dream for years. She soon purchased a distressed house in Moreno Valley where she set about retrofitting the place. Today she is still working on the place but enjoying the California weather and climate in the comfort of her home that she has made quite livable again. She is now retired on Social Security and has adapted to her new surroundings.

James was second child of Emmitt and Millie Wilkin. He married Isophene Wilkinson August 7, 1960. in Utica Church of Christ in Utica, Ohio. They were parents of three children - Teresa Neigel, Robert James, and Carl Eugene.

James served aboard the USS Randolph when the Mercury Space Missions were recovered for the US Space flights of the 1960s. He served about 8 years in the Navy as a Machinist Mate before being discharged. He had visited several countries during his tour of duty. He worked at Pure Oil Co Refinery in Heath, Ohio for a few years before attending Johnson Bible College in Knoxville, Tennessee after which he was ordained a Minister of the Gospel for the Christian Churches and started preaching in several places

He and Isophene separated and divorced about 1991 and in about 1992 he married Judy Thomas in Kansas City, Mo. and they divorced. In about 1995 James married Lynn Smith and is making a new life for himself.

b., Donald and Jerry were divorced, In 1965 Donald was drafted into the US Marine Corps and served 19 months in Vietnam in various locations. Before going to Vietnam he had married Betty Wolfe of Mason, West Virginia. He was to be redeployed back to Vietnam in 1967

He was given leave to prepare to leave for Vietnam. He picked up two friends at the Base planning to drop them off in Ohio on his way to Mason, W. Va. On the road south of Athens, Ohio his car left the road and crashed into an Apple Tree. He died of injuries on October 28, 1967.

He was buried with full Military Honors from the Marine Corps at Kirkland Memorial Gardens near Mason, W. Va. He had been awarded two Bronze Stars plus the Purple Heart for his service in Vietnam. This item adapted from a story written by his loving Brother, Richard A. Wilkin. as he paid tribute to him in 1998-99, in his Wilkin Family History Publication.

Margaret Ann Wilkin, a twin sister to Richard was born July 9, 1946 and grew up on the Emmitt Wilkin Farm in Licking County near Homer, Ohio.

Maggie graduated from Northridge High School located East of Johnstown, Ohio in Licking Co. After graduation she worked through the summer of 1964, and then attended Capital City School of Nursing, in Washington D.0 While studying for a Nursing Career she met and married James Meredith December 10, 1965, who was in the US Navy at the time. Maggie continued her studies a short time and then left the school to go to work for Acacia Mutual Life Insurance Company that was located across the street from the Nation's Capital Building in Washington D. C.

In 1967 about April, Jim was discharged from the Navy and the couple moved to Cairo, Illinois which was Jim's hometown. After about 6 months, Jim re-entered the Navy and they moved to Memphis, Tennessee. Then after some training there the Navy moved them to Lemoore Naval Station and they lived in Riverdale, California. They remained there until the Spring of 1969 when Jim received a Medical Discharge from the Navy at which time they moved to Columbus, Ohio. Thomas Arthur was then born at Lockbourne AFB south of Columbus in Franklin Co. on June 4, 1970.

Her second son, martin Lynn was born Nov. 6, 1974 in Franklin Co. while Maggie and Jim were living in Westerville, Ohio. Troubles in their marriage led to a separation and Maggie moved to Evansville, Indiana with her two sons.

After Maggie moved to Evansville, she was employed by Welborne Hospital as a Medical Transcriptionist where she was employed for sometime. A few years after ending her first marriage, she met and married Ronald Emil McMillen on August 28, 1982. On June 9, 1983 Maggie and Ron were blessed with the birth of a daughter, Amanda Rae, Maggie continued to work at Welborne Hospital for several more years.

 1946 Richard Allen Wilkin Richard Allen Wilkin is the third son of Emmitt Richard Wilkin. He was born in Newark, Licking County, Ohio on July 9, 1946. There were a total of five children born to the marriage of Emmitt Wilkin and Millie Mable Hunt, they were: Betty Louise, James Edward, Donald Lee, and the twins Richard A. and Margaret Ann.

Richard and his siblings grew up on a farm about five miles West of Utica, Ohio and two miles South of the village of Homer, Ohio. The farm was located on US Hwy 62 just West of the crossroads of US Hwy 661 and US Hwy 62. (At what used to be the site of the Famous Eight Corner Barn).

This farm has lots of memories for the Wilkin siblings, both good and not so good. Many days were spent along the Lake Fork Creek that runs through the center of the farm, and divides it horizontally just south of the old farmhouse and barns. Swimming, fishing, and frog hunting were the favorite activities during the summer months after chores and farm work was done. Of course there was enough WORK. to go around as the family always had two truck gardens and lots of hogs, cattle, and chickens to care for. Along with the nearly 200 acres of crops, such as corn, wheat, oats, and lots of hay to be baled most of which was required for all the livestock for winter feeding. So many hours were filled in the fields working with the crops. Also, to help the farming and the family, Emmitt was involved doing work off the farm doing harvesting and hay baling for a large variety of neighbors and other people in the community. SO naturally, the main crew that was used at most of these locations was the sons of his family.

All members of the Wilkin family were kept busy like so many farm families of the day were and most likely still are today, but the work was hard and taught values as well as kept most of the children of the day out of trouble.

At the age of five, Richard found out the hard way that people have to deal with handicaps to succeed in all of life, when he fell from a hay wagon and broke his right elbow. For months he struggled with first the fact that in those days the elbow could not be worked with very well. The doctors of the day worked with it to get it to heal, then physical therapy of the day required Richard to carry a little bucket and to add stones each day until the strength was built up enough to be able to use the arm. This was only partly successful but it did work well enough to do most of the work and activities required for First Grade.

When Richard and Margaret were just teenagers, their parents separated and were divorced in 1961. Richard and Margaret were the only two of the five children that were left at home. They moved to Croton, Ohio. it was quite a transition from the farm to rural town life. Throughout High School, Millie, Richard and Margaret lived in a rental apartment above the Croton Hardware Store. It was a great place to live. Many fond memories were helped by several good Christian People of that town and how they took care of this new family in there midst. Starting with Ned and Marjorie DeBolt, who owned the Hardware Store. Mrs. DeBolt was Math teacher at the New Northridge North High School and was responsible for getting the family moved to Croton and help them to get set up. They were two wonderful People very dear to Millie, Margaret and Richard.

Next there were the many people from the Croton Church of Christ Family that were always there to give a hand and too many to name individually, but they surely will receive God's Blessings for taking all of the strays in and making them feel God's Love.

One of the most important people of Croton, to Richard had to be a lady named Grace Grandstaff. Grace owned and operated the Red and White Market in the Center of Croton, and hired Richard at the age of 13, as a carry-out boy. Over the next several years she instructed Richard in all matters involved with the Grocery Store Business. She also assisted in his development with responsibilities and understanding a lot about life in general.

It was while living at Croton that Richard managed to shatter his right elbow again, but this time through the intervention of Dr. Carl Coleman and the University of Ohio Medical Center, was able to get surgical repair of the right elbow and regain almost 85 percent use of it. With more surgery to repair some nerve damage and lots of therapy it turned out to be only a slight handicap from that time to the present. (Oh the wonders of new Science and Medical Talents.)

Richard was at the cutting edge of Technology and new advances in several areas of Ohio and the Nation. A new project for High Schools was set up in Licking County, where for the last two years of his High School he was able to attend Heath Vocational High School in the studies of Electrical and Electronics Technology. Then even before graduating he was successful at being employed as a TV and Radio Repairman in the village of Johnstown, Ohio. Shortly after graduating from both Heath Vocational High School and Northridge High School at the same time as his sister Margaret, Richard joined the United States Air Force. Here he received training for repairing Avionics Systems (Navigation Aid Systems) used in all of the Air Force aircraft. This was to fulfill a boyhood fantasy to be able to work on highly advanced electronics equipment and airplanes at the same time.

Richard managed to go on to complete several notable accomplishments while serving with the U. S. Air Force. His list of schools and courses spanned all of his almost 21 years of career with the USAF, and the opportunity to travel to almost twenty different countries was a very beneficial experience. None of these more prominent than when in 1979 he was added to the list of people to perform Maintenance and operations of the Airborne Command and Control Systems (the Airborne Command Post) both on the ground and also in-flight. After nearly 7000 flying hours and much time spent in alert facilities across the upper northwest part of the U. S. He had attained the rank of Tech. Sergeant and Senior Air Crewman, with several honors to his credit. This was an extremely prestigious position as there are very few enlisted members of the U. S. Air Force who ever hold a flying position. He thanks the good Lord who granted him the talents to hold and maintain that kind of Honor. (Not too bad for a youth that had a slight handicap who was told he could never do that sort of thing.)

One of the greatest things in Richard's life came about when he eloped with his High School Sweetheart to be married in Greensboro, North Carolina, July 12, 1965. He was married to Anna Marie Hicks of Alexandria, Ohio. They managed, with several interruptions by the USAF, to have three children added to their union. First came Juanita Annette Wilkin on August 6, 1966, next Glenda Jean Wilkin on July 14, 1968 and last but not least was Paul Allen Wilkin on Aug. 2, 1971. They lived in Wichita, Kansas; Johnstown, Ohio (While Richard was in Southeast Asia); Outville, Ohio; Adana, Turkey; Grissom AFB, Indiana; Hastings, Nebraska; Offutt AFB, Nebraska; Rapid City, South Dakota.

After retiring from the Air Force, Rick as he is called now, moved to Michigan and accepted a position as Field Service Engineer for Photon Sources in Livonia, Michigan. This company developed industrial CO2 Laser systems for the fast and precision cutting and welding of metal and several other materials. These systems were computer controlled, and varied from very small units to very large and powerful units. On one occasion when a test block would happen to be knocked down it demonstrated its power by punching a quarter-sized hole right through a concrete block in the wall. This was really exciting top-drawer technology and Rick quickly rose through the ranks to become the Technical Support Engineer and then Department Manager in about one and one-half years. Unfortunately the life in the Air Force had not prepared him for a civilian world that was full of words like "HOSTILE TAKE-OVERS" and "LAYOFFS". Having only heard the Word

"DOWNSIZING", just about six months after climbing to the Manager position, those words became very meaningful as Rick received his PINK SLIP. It was one of the hardest blows that he had ever experienced in his working career. But things have to move on and so did he.

The next position he accepted was with UTDC CORP. They were the company that was building and setting up the automated train system for downtown Detroit, Michigan called "THE PEOPLE MOVER". He was hired as one of the Senior Electronic Techs. that were to maintain the system and keep it running. This was very good training and soon he was able to master even operating the train which was a thrill. He did his usual thing of sinking his teeth and soul into this system. He was soon approached by the Operations Managers to become the Communications and Maintenance Operations Supervisor. Wow, that was quite a position of responsibilities. Then it was time for the reality check, along with accepting the position Rick and his family would be required to move from their relatively safe and comfortable home in Garden City to the hostile and sometimes very deadly inter city of Detroit itself. This was to insure that all of the employees lived inside the Detroit City limits because Detroit was taking over the operations and business of the People Mover. Well, when they informed Rick that Quote "He had no choice about the matter" this kind of went against the twenty some years which he had served this Country to insure the rights of its citizens to have choices, So three days later Rick went to work for Great Lakes Steel in Ecorse, Michigan as the 80 inches Hot Mill Electrical Foreman. After about two years with Great Lakes Steel, Rick's health began to show signs of trouble and he was told by his Doctor that he would have to get out of that environment or he would probably not last long.

Just a few weeks later he had accepted a position with Toyota Machinery of Arlington Heights, Illinois. This was as Field Service Engineer, and would launch him into the world of High Tech Computer Controlled Machining Centers. Although it meant very long periods away from home it became a very good place for a person to develop skills with Electronics, Electrical and Mechanical Sciences that do not seem to be readily available anywhere else in today's world. Rick was able to do his work very well and when the Shutdown or Downsizing of Toyota USA was appearing, was able to move to another company then to the next as he had to in order to keep the paycheck that he and Anna were used to having to pay the bills. While working for Mazak Corp., Rick started suffering mini-strokes and memory loss it became severe enough that he was placed on full disability in July of 1997. This condition is ongoing today and the outcome doesn't look good. But he wanted to leave his children and grandchildren with something to bring them closer to the family that had been so distant, with all those long years away from home in the service of the country and all the traveling of his profession. He started researching the Wilkin Family History and the more contacts that he made with cousins and ancestors the bigger the task became. Well, today you will find in these pages the fruits of months of searching through Family Bibles, County records, interviews with older living relatives, notes from family input, and many hours spent in libraries in five states. With the assistance of his lifelong companion and sometimes seemingly unappreciated partner in this world, Richard has attempted to authenticate these writings with hard substantiated fact and will continue as long as he is able to do so. He hopes to get to the roots of the WILKIN name back through time, but now even after many searches the research has only been able to verify back to the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, But that is a very big history from then till today's family.

She was born July 24, 1946 in Columbus, Franklin Co., Ohio.

Anna learned very many things while growing up in her mom and dad's rural farm located north of Alexandria, Ohio in Licking Co. She learned to sew, quilt, cook, housekeeping and all things necessary in the care of a large family from her mother. She graduated from Northridge High School, located east of Johnstown, Ohio in Licking County.

While attending her Senior Class Skip Day Picnic at Buckeye Lake Park in May 1964, she met Rick Wilkin who with his twin sister were members of the graduating class of Northridge High. Rick had attended classes at the Heath Vocational High School in Heath Ohio but was still enrolled at Northridge High, so apparently their paths had not previously crossed until the picnic. They started dating and were married in July 1965 in Greensboro, South Carolina.

As Rick was an enlisted member of the US Air Force this meant that Anna had to leave the peaceful surroundings of her parents rural home to the rustle and bustle of Air Force communities around the world. She had to pick up and move the entire family whenever and wherever the Air Force would send her husband. She moved first to Wichita, Kansas for about one year and then back to an apartment in Johnstown, Ohio where on August 6, 1966, the couple's first child, Juanita Annette was born in Newark, Ohio. Just after delivering this child, her husband left for an assignment in Southeast Asia where he was involved with the Vietnam War. This was a very long separation for Rick and Anna but she managed to keep the home fires burning and when Rick returned in 1967, they moved back to Wichita. There were several more separations as Rick was always being called upon to do temporary duty in other parts of the world for up to six months at a time. Through it all, Anna kept things going at home. Between his absences she managed to have two more children Glenda Jean on July 14, 1968 and Paul Allen on August 2, 1971.

Shortly after Glenda wa born, Rick re-enlisted for another four years and with the bonus he received, they purchased their first home at 1000 N. Buckner St. in Derby, Kansas. This was the family's home until December of 1971.

When Paul was just four months old, Rick was assigned to duties in Incirlik, Turkey, In due time Anna and her three children journeyed to Turkey by Airplane to meet Rick there. This was quite an experience and lasted almost two and half years. While stationed in Turkey, Rick was assigned to temporary duty tours in Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia, Germany, Spain and around the earth twice in caring for the Aircraft of the US Air Force. In 1973, Rick arranged for their first honeymoon to Athens, Greece where they spent a week just seeing the sights and catching up on lost time together.

Shortly after this trip, Rick was assigned to an Airbase in Indiana. In March 1975 Rick was assigned to duties with the Air Force Recruiting Command and after graduating from Recruiting School, he was assigned to an Air Base in Nebraska and lived in Hastings, Nebraska Later he was reassigned to an office in Council Bluffs, Iowa. and the family moved into Base Housing at Offutt AFB, Nebraska. After about one year Rick was assigned to duties in Rapid City South Dakota in 1977. After living in Base Housing on Ellsworth AFB for about two years, they managed to build their own home on a hillside about eight miles east of Rapid City, S. Dakota. This home proved to be a great place to live which they enjoyed very much.

Rick had been sent to school for almost a year to learn the equipment for the Airborne Command Post and had made Technical Sergeant then had joined the crews that flew and maintained the Aircraft and equipment for the Flying Command Post. This assignment took Rick away from home for weeks at a time and there was always irregular hours with flights at most anytime of the day or night.

Anna worked at several jobs to supplement the family income and to occupy herself while Rick was away. The children had become teenagers and then high school and then graduation. Anna had the responsibility of getting them to activities and at the same time maintaining a working career.

In July 1984, Rick retired from the Air Force and then began the task of finding suitable employment. Rick accepted employment with Photon Sources, a Laser Company in Lavonia, Michigan. The family reluctantly moved from their home in the Black Hills and moved to Garden City, Michigan where they purchased a home. Glenda and Paul graduated from High School in Garden City then Paul left to attend Wentworth Academy in Missouri and a year later received an appointment to attend the Air Force Academy. In the winter of 1991 Paul had to leave the Academy because of stress. Rick and Anna were unhappy in Michigan and the family moved to Pueblo West, Colorado. Rick's father decided to join them in Colorado. He purchased a home about a half mile from Rick and Anna. He was getting settled in when he suffered a fatal heart attack on November 16, 1962. Emmitt was returned to Newark, Ohio for burial beside his sister Loree in Wilson Cemetery.

Rick terminated his employment in Pueblo West and accepted employment in Peoria, Illinois They sold their homes in Rapid City and Pueblo West and moved to Peoria. After moving to Illinois, Rick started having Mini-strokes that soon led to disability retirement.

So far his condition has not worsened and they have been able to travel and pursue other hobbies such as fishing. On July 12, 2000, Rick and Anna celebrated their 35th wedding anniversary. Anna devotes much of her time to following Rick around where he goes to take care of him. They hope that the Good Lord will grant many more years for them to enjoy life and each other and their children and grandchildren. Rick is devoting what time he can to the Family History Project and has completed and published a History of the Samuel and Roseanna Webster Wilkin Family. He has also worked on a History of the Descendants of Thomas Fendel Webster and Elizabeth Pulse Webster. The future of his health is uncertain so he works to make the most of his time. Arthur Bonwell Susan Tollman 1815 - 1855 John David Pulse 40 40 One of the sons of George Pulse, a settler of Liberty township, in the first decade of the nineteenth century, was John D. Pulse, born in Liberty township, in 1816. He marled Cynthia A., daughter of Michael and Polly (Walker) Stroup, a famous pioneer couple of New Market township whose lives are sketched at some length in another article of this volume. After marriage, John D. Pulse located on a farm in Dodson township, where he prospered and was accumulating property rapidly when cut off in the prime of life. In 1855 he had made a trip to Iowa to buy land for investment and while there contracted typhoid fever which terminated fatally twelve days after he returned to his Ohio home. His wife, however, assumed charge of the business and managed it successfully until her death, which occurred in 1899 at the age of seventy-nine years. Her living children are Eliud S., of Dodson township; Flavious O., the subject of this sketch; Michael B., of Brown county, and John W., who resides on the old place. Besides these, Mary E., the first born, and Eliza J., the fourth in order of birth, have passed away. F. O. Pulse, third in age of the children, was born in Dodson township, Highland county, Ohio, March 13, 1845, and remained at home until he had completed his twentieth year. Determined to see something of the world before he settled down to business, he started out on a long trip the objective points of which were Vera Cruz and other cities of Mexico. He was absent a considerable time and, after traveling 12,000 miles without seeing a single person whom he had known before, returned home with the full conviction that the old song was correct in saying there was no other place like home. Shortly after returning, he married Mary E., daughter of John Cramton, of Highland county, and located on the farm which has since been his place of residence.

He showed himself to be not only an industrious but progressive farmer and has increased his original holdings of 122 acres to nearly five times that amount, all of which with the exception of seventy-five acres is under cultivation. He has greatly improved his estate while it was increasing in extent, and it is now ornamented with a handsome and commodious dwelling house, besides the numerous other buildings necessary in first-class farming. Mr. Pulse has been honored by having a post office named after him and he deserves the compliment, as he is one of the representative farmers of the prosperous township of Salem. Of his five children, three were lost in infancy, the living ones being Lillie M., wife of Fred Granger, of Hillsboro, and Clarence P., who is at home. The family are members of the Christian church.

Paul F. Pulse, II, 71 years of Springfield, formerly of Hillsboro, died Monday, September 9, 2002 at the Springfield Mercy Hospital.

He was born in Columbus, Ohio on December 25, 1930 the son of the late Paul F. and Elizabeth (McCall) Pulse, Sr.

He was a 1948 graduate of Hillsboro High School, a 1952 graduate of Ohio State University with a B.S. in Ag Engineering, and a 1953 graduate of the University of New Mexico in Meteorology.  He was a retired Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Air Force serving in the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam Era.  After retiring from military service he was an active farmer in Highland County for fifteen years.  He was an avid camper.  He was a former state Vice President for the Ohio FFA.  He was a member of the National FFA Band.  He received the State and American Farmer award.  He was a member of the Hillsboro Church of Christ, the 1980 Past Patron for the Hillsboro Chapter #444 O.E.S., the Highland Lodge #38 F. & A.M., a lifetime member of the Grand Chapter R.A.M. of Bermuda, lifetime member of the Grand Council R. & S.M. of Bermuda, the Highland Commandery #31 Knights Templar, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite Valley of Columbus, Aladdin Temple of Columbus, Ohio, and a lifetime member of the N.R.A.

Beside his parents he was preceded in death by one daughter, Ruth Ann Pulse.

He is survived by his wife, Eleanor (Ascham) Pulse, who he married on July 27, 1952, son and daughter-in-law, Paul F. and Carol (Colliver) Pulse, III of Scott Air Force Base, Illinois, two daughters and sons-in-law, Deborah and Stephen Moore of Okemos, Michigan, Elizabeth and Patrick Dominik of New Albany, Indiana, brother and sister-in-law, Thomas and Joni Pulse of Hillsboro, two sisters and brothers-in-law, Ann and Thomas Duffe of Georgetown, Texas, Eleanor and David Ferguson of Austin, Texas, seven grandchildren, Jennifer and Bryan Dominik, Katherine and Kelsey Moore, Zachary, Jonathan, and Hannah Pulse.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, September 12, 2002 at 11:00 A.M. at the Hope Miller-Thompson Funeral Home in Hillsboro with John Porter officiating.  Burial will follow in the Hillsboro Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Ohio Masonic Home Endowment Fund, Four Masonic Drive, Springfield, OH 45504 or to a Charity of Choice.  Eleanor Ascham Michael Stroup The good people of New Market were greatly surprised by the appearance of a young man who came among them at the close of a cold, cloudy day late in the autumn of 1801. He was dressed in the rough garb of the pioneer tramp, but upon his head, in place of a cap, he carried an eighteen gallon copper kettle. He had a large bundle strapped to his back with buffalo tugs, and carried a smaller bundle under his arm, while in his hand he carried something looking greatly like an Indian bow.

This unique individual was Michael Stroup, a maker of wool hats, just from Chillicothe, looking for a place to begin business. Stroup was entirely indifferent to any criticisms upon his personal appearance. He was hunting a place to work, and soon had his kettle set in a cabin, and the sound of his bow was heard preparing the wool for hat making. He soon exhausted his stock of material, and as no wool could be obtained in the neighborhood and as his hats when sold barely covered the expenses of his journey and fixtures, he was without stock and without the means of buying more. His hats were sold at $18.00 per dozen.

Just when he was in doubt and uncertainty about the future, an opportunity opened for him to make some money in another way. Simon Kenton had built a mill on Mad river, just beyond the present site of Springfield, and employed Robert Boyce, of New Market, to bring the millstones from Maysville. The journey from Maysville to New Market was not very difficult, as a comparatively good road had been opened between the two places, but after reaching New Market, the forest was unbroken on to the site of the mill. Kenton had empowered Boyce to employ men to cut a wagon road through to Springfield, promising to pay the money as soon as the, stones for his mill arrived.

Stroup, William Finley, and George Cailey were employed to do this work. They began the labor about the middle of February, 1802, and reached Spring-field, half starved and frozen, in fifteen days from starting out. Simon Kenton was not at the mill and when found he was in his cabin four miles away and without money to pay for the labor performed or food necessary for the return journey. They obtained a meal on credit, of a log house tavern keeper in Springfield, and with all speed hastened back to New Market after an absence of nineteen days, hungry, and their clothing in rags from brush and brier. Stroup was greatly vexed, but otherwise managed to finish his stock of hats. These men opened a roadway important even down to the present, for the "Old Mead River road" survives, as a public highway.

The history of this wedding, as given in Scott's history, is amusing, also valuable as a picture of the character and moral tone of social life at that time. "Miss Walker was a very handsome, black-eyed girl of eighteen, who had emigrated from Fleming county, Ky., with her mother and stepfather, Joseph Myers, to the falls of Paint four years before, and came to New Market in 1801.

"She wore on this occasion a nice plain cap on her head, white silk gloves, a plain white collar, and shoes and stockings. Her dress was a very fine light-figured calico, which cost one dollar per yard. Most of those who could get it preferred white muslin worth two dollars per yard; often, however, they wore homespun, as meeting all requirements. The groom* was dressed in brown dress, coat and pants, white mar- seilles vest, white socks and low quartered shoes and white kid gloves. Generally in those days the grooms were not nearly so well dressed. The wedding took place at two o'clock p. m. The party was small and the ceremony was performed by Squire Oliver Ross.

"'Well,' said the squire, in his peculiar Irish style, 'we have met today to join together in holy matrimony Michael Stroup and Polly Walker, as respectable a couple as iver the Lord brought togither. Now I hope that not one of you will have any objections to their gettin' married. I think there will be no objictions. Join your right hands. Wall, Mr. Mike, will you take Miss Polly, whom you hold by the right hand, and as good looking and virtuous a young lady as iver the Virgin Mary was, to be yer lawfully wedded wife. Do you promise to forsake all others (now by the Lord, Mike, you must quit your running after other girls and cling to her alone, will ye, Mike?)'

"'Yes, yes," said the groom, "Oh, by G—d, yes.'

"'Well, Miss Polly, will you take Mike, whom you hold by his right hand, to be your lawfully wedded husband (he is worthy, for he is as sprightly a young man as iver wore a pair of buckskin brokins), you promise to forsake all others—but what the devil's to make a woman promise that, when you know they won't keep their promise, but I think you are an exception—you will cling to him till it please the Lord to separate you by death, will you, Polly? I know you will.'

"'Yes.'

"'Then I pronounce yoii man and wife, no more two but one. Now go home and raise your children for the Lord. The Lord bless you, ha! ha! ha! take your seats now, ha! the Lord bless you.'

Long and lovingly this couple lived in the enjoyment of their share of temporal blessing, seeing their fourteen children grow up like olive branches around their table.
